Case Study: Water Utility Upgrades Environmental Monitoring
Customer Background
A municipal water utility in Latin America operates 12 treatment plants and supplies drinking water to over 800,000 residents. Its central laboratory monitors microbiological water quality, including total coliforms, E. coli and heterotrophic plate counts, under national drinking water standards and WHO guidelines. The laboratory needed a more efficient and accurate solution to handle increasing sample volumes during seasonal demand peaks and expanding service areas.
Challenges
- High sample volumes during the rainy season overwhelmed existing testing capacity and created backlogs.
- Conventional multiple-tube fermentation methods were labor-intensive, slow and difficult to scale.
- Occasional false-positive results triggered unnecessary boil-water advisories and caused public concern.
- Aging equipment and inconsistent consumable quality reduced confidence in routine monitoring results.
Our Solution
We supplied membrane filtration systems, sterile cellulose nitrate membranes, chromogenic culture media for simultaneous detection of total coliforms and E. coli, membrane pad kits and quality control organisms. We also provided technician training on standardized filtration procedures, aseptic technique and interpretation of chromogenic results, together with preventive maintenance guidance for filtration equipment.
Implementation
Following a pilot study at one treatment plant, the utility validated the membrane filtration method against its existing reference method over a 60-day period. The new workflow reduced hands-on time per sample and improved result clarity with color-based differentiation of coliform colonies. After successful validation, the method was rolled out across all 12 treatment plants with standardized consumable kits and a scheduled supply program.
Results
| Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Sample processing capacity | 80 samples/day | 200 samples/day |
| Time to confirmed result | 48 hours | 24 hours |
| False-positive rate | 4.2% | 0.5% |
| Technician hands-on time per sample | 25 minutes | 8 minutes |
Customer Feedback
"The chromogenic media combined with membrane filtration has been a game changer for our laboratory. We now release results twice as fast with far fewer false alarms, which has significantly improved public trust in our water quality reporting and reduced unnecessary operational costs."
Conclusion
Beyond routine monitoring, the laboratory now uses the same chromogenic media for recreational water testing and source water surveillance, expanding the value of the standardized platform across the organization. The utility has standardized our microbiology supplies across all 12 treatment plants and adopted a preventive stock management program to ensure uninterrupted monitoring throughout the year. This cooperation demonstrates the value of high-performance membrane filtration and chromogenic media in delivering fast, accurate and cost-effective water quality monitoring for large-scale public water systems.
